Meetup Magic
As I come to the end of a week in Mexico with ~400 of my the smartest, friendliest, open-source-loving geeks I could wish to know, I come to realise that Automattic's meetups are just... magical.

Hurricane Milton
From safely outside of its predicted path, just around the Yucatan coast, Hurricane Milton seems like a forboding and distant monster. A growing threat whose path will thankfully take it away, not towards, me. My heart goes out to the people on the other side of the Gulf of Mexico who find themselves along the route of this awakened beast.

It's 05:30 local time on the third day of my work meetup in Tulum, on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico, and I was just woken by incredibly heavy rain. I got up and stepped out until it, and was surprised to discover that it's almost as warm as the shower in my bathroom. In the distance, beyond the palm trees and over the hill, the booms of thunder are getting closer. Beautiful weather for a beautiful place.

Tropical vegetation under stormy skies. Long exposure in pre-sunrise light.

Found GC4PYCF Thames Path - Floodproof
This checkin to GC4PYCF Thames Path - Floodproof reflects a geocaching.com log entry. See more of Dan's cache logs. Excellent cache, which I was pleased to observe has the largest conceivable container possible for its hiding place: nice one! I love a good treetop cache!
Once I'd free the right tree, getting up was relatively easy: โฆ -

This checkin to GC4QAE6 Bernadette reflects a geocaching.com log entry. See more of Dan's cache logs. After a brief overshoot - too excited to finally be catching up to Ruth and the rest of my squad! - doubled back to find this easy location. Cache was lying on the floor which I assume isn't the โฆ

Found GCA7Q4A Elephant Parade
Big thanks to the cache owner for their note. Somehow I'd not seen the obvious route. Followed a family of ducks and soon found the cache location. FP awarded in part for the lovely cache but mostly for the attentive CO who posted a note so promptly. TFTC!

This checkin to GC51F07 Knapwell one and a half reflects a geocaching.com log entry. See more of Dan's cache logs. Found GC8TNPE Incy Wincy
The elder child and I are staying nearby and couldn't resist coming to a nearby cache with so many FPs. The name gave us a bit of a clue what we would be looking for but nothing could have prepared us for for this imaginative and unusual container!

Zap
This week, a live-to-earth fault on the grid resulted in me getting zapped with mains electricity. Unfortunately, it didn't give me superpowers, just a mildly-interesting anecdote and a partially-shaved chest.

[Bloganuary] Road Trip!
When I was younger, stupider, and poorer, I'd go to amazing lengths to get to and from places without having to wrangle accommodation at the other end, leading to frankly ludicrous road trips. Here's an example.

It Is Only Q
The programmers at British Gas are among the many who don't believe that a surname can be only a single character, and their customer service agents have clearly worked around their validations (or just left a note for themselves in the problematic field!)... leading to hilarious postal mail.

FreeDeedPoll.org.uk, Punk Rock Edition
A Birmingham-based punky trio, Luxury Nan Smell, have released a song named "freedeedpoll.org.uk", in reference to my website of the same name. This was just the kind of uplifting thing I needed to hear about.

It Takes Two
At the weekend, Ruth and I travelled to Edinburgh to attend a tango class for which we were in no-way qualified. We learned a lot, but mostly because we knew very little to begin with!
