Origami (Weird Web October)

I've been intermittently taking part in Weird Web October, this year. My first contribution, last week, was Move the mouse across the screen, from the prompt of skeu(o)morphism.

Here's my entry for day 14: origami:

Today's distraction can be found at origami.danq.dev and ought to work well across all modern desktop and mobile devices.

Go have a play with it and let me know what you think. Features include:

  • It's all open-source, under the Unlicense (but bits of this code are hacky as hell; sorry!).
  • I'm using my git webhook deployment pattern to push repository changes to the site.
  • I'm proud that I managed to find a way to define the SVG rotation steps to make the "instructions" part of the code relatively slick and decoupled, so it could almost be used to fold a different shape.
  • It works on mobile devices, which turned out to be a huge pain because of discrepancies with dvh units (mad props to Ruth for trying breaking an early version with her phone's quirky resolution!).

There's more information about the project and its inspirations in the "help" menu within the game itself.

A peep behind the curtain: here's an animation illustrating how I had to learn to dissect/think about origami in order to make origami.danq.dev for my Weird Web October contribution today.
