Year: 2024

  • A design for a completely different part of the WooCommerce Extensions Management tool, again with a little green blob. Dan's floating head looks thoughtful above it, with a thought-bubble reading "wow, we're really going all-in on these little blobs, aren't we?"

    The Stupidest CSS

Yesterday, I wrote the stupidest CSS code of my entire web development career. The code itself wasn't the stupid bit; my misinterpretation of the designer's wishes was what caused the problem!

  • Having lost the (stupid, proprietary) charging cable for my smartwatch, and not been able to find it for several days, I've undertaken the magical ritual that's most-certain to make it reappear: ordering a replacement one.

  • Do you think the 80s/90s advertisement campaign for Sarson's vinegar - "Don't say vinegar, say Sarson's" - ever worked?

Like: have you ever heard anybody ask you to "pass the Sarson's"?

  • ECG printout showing a report of "Abnormal ECG: sinus arrhythmia".

    Zap

This week, a live-to-earth fault on the grid resulted in me getting zapped with mains electricity. Unfortunately, it didn't give me superpowers, just a mildly-interesting anecdote and a partially-shaved chest.

I'm pleased to say this was printed on our brand spanking new Brother Laser. The entire Vagina Museum thanks you for your generosity in our hour of need. Yours Quim-cerely

I received a lovely letter from the Vagina Museum - which I've not had the opportunity to visit yet - printed on their new laserjet printer.

Bumblebees surprise scientists with 'sophisticated' social learning

There are two - maybe three - things I love about the recent discovery that bees exhibit complex social learning behaviours. Allow me to drone on about bees for a while...

  • RSS reader showing duplicate copies of the news story "Barbie 2? 'We'd love to,' says Warner Bros boss", and an entry from BBC Sounds.

    BBC News... without the crap

BBC News' RSS feed has lately started getting duplicates because they're mucking about with guids. Also what's with the iPlayer and BBC Sounds content in there? Let's "fix" that for them, shall we?

  • Photograph of a boxing match, but with the heads of the competitors replaced with the ActivityPub and RSS logos (and "AP" or "RSS" written on their clothes, respectively). RSS is delivering a powerful uppercut to ActivityPub.

    RSS > ActivityPub

RSS is better than ActivityPub. Fight me.

  • For World Book Day (which here in the UK is marked a month earlier than the rest of the world) the kids' school invited people to come "dressed as a word".

As usual, the kids and teachers participated along with only around two other adults. But of course I was one of them.

    This year, I was "magical".

Full image of Dan, a white man with long hair (tied back) and a beard, stands in a Cotswolds-esque village green wearing a black jacket and holding three large novelty playing cards and a magic wand.

  • If you enjoy a bit of "cable gore", let me introduce you to the fusebox cupboard at my house, with its plethora of junctions, fuses, breakers, switches, timers, and cabling everywhere! Banana for scale.

Full image of A cupboard the height of a fully-grown adult containing several fuseboxes (two large, one medium, and a handful of single-fuse ones, with a mixture of traditional fuses and RCD breakers), a large switch toggling between mains and a generator, a mains timer, and copious wiring. There's a banana in there too.

  • Laptop and mug alongside a notebook and pencil. In the notebook is written "TODO: 1. Come out to colleagues. 2. ???. 3. Profit."

    Out as Poly at Work

I've been "out" about my polyamory in every job I've had for the last 20+ years. I recommend it.

  • I guess installing a sign was cheaper than retraining the helpline operators not to shout at everybody.

Full image of A sign advertising a number for a "Customer Helpline" directly above a sign that advises "Ear protection must be worn".

  • Hot on the heels of my victory over Wonder Boy 35 years after I first played it, I can now finally claim to have beaten Golden Axe, 25 years after I first played it.

Full image of A young boy in green pyjamas stands alongside a video games cabinet. The screen shows 16-bit graphics of a golden axe, below which the text reads: "After a long, hard battle you finally defeat the evil emperor. Now the world will be at peace again. You are a true hero!"

Couldn't have done it without my magic-wielding 7-year-old co-op buddy.
