    What Argentine Tango is like...

A series of metaphors about what tango feels like, to me. Like improvising music. Like spinning tops. Like an flock of birds. Or something like that.

  • Ruth and I stopped at Hanley Swan for a picnic lunch on our way home from our weekend of Argentine Tango classes. Within seconds our lunch had attracted a large flock of ducks from the little duck houses on the village's adorable duck pond.

But better yet: I managed to catalogue like eleven memorial benches around the pond and the village green, all previously unknown to OpenBenches (@openbenches@botsin.space): #46341, #46342, #46343, #46344, #46345, #46346, #46347, #46348, #46349, #46351, #46352!

    Found GCB19MJ St Ann's Well

This checkin to GCB19MJ St Ann's Well reflects a geocaching.com log entry. See more of Dan's cache logs. There's some kind of foot race going on today and the well area is heaving with people: spectators lining the roadside are cheering and whooping as the runners barrel past. My partner Ruth and are only in โ€ฆ

  • On the window sill of the bar at the hotel where Ruth and I are learning to tango... this morning I made a squirrel friend!

At least now I'll have succeeded at something today even if I can't get the hang on not-treading-on-toes!

  • The bed in my hotel room tonight is made up for not one, not two, but three occupants. Did they... see me and instantly clock me as polyamorous?

  • TIL that I dance Argentine Tango with Ruth better... when I close my eyes. It's a fundamentally intuitive and semi-improvised dance built on connection and communication and it turns out that, for me at least, the best way to stop trying to visually predict what a partner (I know well enough to "read" visually) is going to do and instead... just move together... is to stop looking at her! Weird, but effective!

(Yes, we're still learning to tango. Slowly.)

  • Making another attempt at learning to tango, this time at a more-beginner, more-local class. It's still super hard but he makes me question whether I even know how to walk, let alone dance, but I love it so much!

  • In a church hall, its walls decorated with colourful cloths, Dan and Ruth stand in a large circle of people, watching a man and a woman preparing to demonstrate some tango steps.

    It Takes Two

At the weekend, Ruth and I travelled to Edinburgh to attend a tango class for which we were in no-way qualified. We learned a lot, but mostly because we knew very little to begin with!
