  • Never underestimate the power of people who are motivated by the good they can do in the world.

Today I was in awe of this team of unpaid volunteers who, having already given up their bank holiday weekend, worked through dinner and into the night to ensure the continued uptime of a piece software that enables the listening service of emotional support and suicide helplines.

    Found GCA2025 Where's 25? - Locationless Cache

    Happy 25th birthday, geocaching.
I'm spending the weekend volunteering for a nonprofit I founded (it's almost as old as geocaching, at 23). We're staying in a hotel at N 52ยฐ 36.184' W 001ยฐ 53.869'. I've also gotten out to find a couple of local geocaches.

  • Found GC9QD6R Centurion

Woke early, as usual, for the first day of a weekend of volunteering, while staying at nearby Fairlawns. I've already tapped out the most-local caches to that hotel on previous stays, so for this morning's walk I came further afield to find this (and one of the two puzzle caches not too far away; that's next, hopefully!)

    Avanti's Accessibility Failure

Train provider Avanti's website may be accessible... but their emails, which you need to interact with to USE their website... are not. It's simply not possible to verify your email address if you use a screen reader, and there's no guest checkout option.

Variable-aspect adaptive-bitrate video... in vanilla HTML?

Thanks to recent browser enhancements, it's possible to show videos of different aspect ratios based on CSS media queries with no JavaScript dependencies. You can even combine it with adaptive bitrate streaming, even on static hosting. Let me show you how.

  • "Trans former judge plans to challenge gender ruling at European court": https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9qw2149yelo

Representation matters. That we have a trans former-judge, somebody both well-equipped and motivated to escalate this important challenge to the ECHR, is hugely fortunate.

We need more representation (of trans people specifically, but many other groups too, and perhaps particularly in the intersections) in positions of power, expertise, and authority. To defend the human rights of all of us.

    Wishing you luck, Victoria McCloud.

INP - React 16ms, Web Components 8ms. Transferred - React 62.3kb (compressed), 202kB (uncompressed), in 37ms, Web Components 5.2kB (compressed), 19.5kB (uncompressed), in 22ms.

    Deprecate React

Just to reassure myself that I really can do all the things I say on my CV, I've been looking at tech tests that touch on each of them. I can definitely write React, for example... but... I might question the wisdom of a company that's exclusively recruiting for React skills in their front-end developers...

  • Venn-Euler diagram with circles representing Romantic Breakups and Open-Source Tech Layoffs (the former overlaid with a broken heart icon, the latter with a background reminiscient of the Automattic logo). The items unique to each are 'paired': Who keeps the dog? / Who keeps the laptop?; Half your friends take "their side" / Half your friends still work for them; Slim chance of make-up sex / Slim chance of meaningful reference; Find out in person (unless they're a monster) / Find out by email (with 10 minutes notice); Comes with a brutal list of your flaws / Comes with no useful feedback whatsoever; "I'm happier on my own anyway!" / "Oh fuck, how am I going to pay the bills?"; Bags in the hallway / Bags under your eyes. The intersection of both circles includes: Trash talk; Risk of rebound; "How did I not see this coming?"; Sadness when you wake up without them; Still feel responsible for the things you produced; Emotionally gruelling.

    Breakups vs Layoffs

I've had a few breakups, but I've only been made redundant once. There's a surprising overlap between the two! Here, let's put a Venn-Euler diagram together...
